What Is a Catalog Format?
In commercial printing, a catalog format refers to the combination of page count, trim size, binding method, and paper stock that defines how a multipage publication is constructed. Choosing the right format affects not only the visual impression of the finished piece but also unit cost, postal weight, press sheet utilization, and bindery workflow. Understanding these variables before designing a catalog helps avoid costly prepress revisions and ensures the printed product matches the intended use.
Catalogs are broadly distinguished from brochures by page count and binding. A brochure typically folds a single sheet into panels, while a catalog uses multiple sheets assembled and bound together. The line between the two blurs around eight to sixteen pages, where some projects use a self-cover saddle-stitched format that shares characteristics of both.
Common Trim Sizes and Page Counts
Trim size is the final cut dimension of each page. Standard catalog trim sizes have evolved around press sheet dimensions and postal regulations, making certain sizes more economical to produce than others.
- 8.5 × 11 in (letter): The most common catalog trim in North America. Fits naturally on a 25 × 38 in press sheet and aligns with standard office printers for digital proofing. Works well for product catalogs, annual reports, and training materials.
- 8.5 × 5.5 in (half-letter): Produced by trimming a letter sheet in half. Popular for compact consumer catalogs, lookbooks, and promotional booklets where a smaller footprint is desirable.
- 9 × 12 in: A slightly oversized format favored for high-end retail and fashion catalogs. The additional real estate accommodates large photography but increases paper cost and postage weight.
- 6 × 9 in: Common for mail-order and trade catalogs where weight economy matters. Fits a #10 or 6 × 9 envelope and qualifies for certain postal rate categories.
- 5.5 × 8.5 in (digest): Identical to half-letter but oriented vertically. Frequently used for program booklets, menus, and technical manuals.
Page counts in catalogs must be multiples of four because each press sheet, when folded, produces four pages (two leaves, front and back). Saddle-stitched catalogs work in increments of four pages; perfect-bound catalogs have more flexibility but still benefit from page counts divisible by eight or sixteen to minimize paper waste.
Binding Methods for Multipage Catalogs
Binding determines how assembled pages are held together. Each method carries different durability, lay-flat behavior, and cost implications.
Saddle Stitching
Saddle stitching uses wire staples driven through the spine of folded and nested signatures. It is the most economical binding for catalogs up to roughly 64 pages, though the practical limit depends on paper thickness. Thicker stocks and higher page counts cause the spine to "swell," pushing inner pages inward and reducing the usable trim area — a phenomenon called creep. Prepress must account for creep by progressively shifting inner page content outward, or the trimmed catalog will show uneven margins.
Perfect Binding
Perfect binding glues a square spine to a gathered stack of pages, producing the flat-backed look common in trade paperbacks and thick retail catalogs. It accommodates page counts from roughly 48 pages up to several hundred. The square spine allows for title printing, which is useful for catalogs stored upright on shelves. Perfect-bound pieces do not lay completely flat when open, which can affect how spreads are designed — art and text should avoid the gutter area near the spine.
Coil and Comb Binding
Spiral coil and plastic comb binding are used when lay-flat functionality is critical, such as reference guides, recipe books, and technical manuals. Pages open fully flat, making them practical for desk use. Neither method supports spine printing. These bindings are typically applied after digital or offset printing and are more common in short-run or on-demand production than in high-volume offset press runs.
Prepress Considerations for Catalog Production
Catalogs require more rigorous prepress preparation than single-sheet pieces because errors compound across many pages and multiple press signatures.
- Imposition: Pages must be arranged on press sheets in the correct order and orientation so they fall in sequence after folding and trimming. Imposition is handled by prepress software and varies by press size and binding method. Supplying files in reader-spread order (pages 1, 2, 3…) rather than printer-spread order allows the print provider's imposition software to assemble signatures correctly.
- Bleed and safe zones: A standard bleed of 0.125 in beyond the trim edge is required on all sides where background color or images extend to the edge. Critical content — text, logos, key imagery — should remain at least 0.125 in inside the trim line to account for cutting tolerance.
- Color mode and profiles: All page elements should be in CMYK color mode. RGB images embedded in catalog PDFs are converted at rip time, often producing unexpected color shifts. Embedding an ICC output profile such as SWOP or GRACoL helps ensure consistent color reproduction across press runs and facilities.
- Fonts and image resolution: Fonts must be embedded or outlined in the submitted PDF. Raster images intended for offset printing should be supplied at a minimum of 300 ppi at final print size. Images pulled from websites at 72 ppi will appear soft or pixelated in print.
- Cover versus text stock: Most catalogs use a heavier cover stock (80–100 lb cover) paired with a lighter interior text stock (60–100 lb text). These are specified separately in prepress and affect both the printing and bindery workflow.
