Brochure Formats and Fold Styles
Brochures are produced in a range of standard formats, each defined by how the finished sheet is folded and how many panels result. The choice of fold affects both the reading sequence and the binding or distribution method, so format decisions belong early in the design process rather than after files are built.
The most common fold styles in commercial printing are:
- Bi-fold (single fold): One fold produces four panels — two on each side of the sheet. Common for simple leave-behinds and inserts.
- Tri-fold (letter fold): Two parallel folds divide the sheet into three equal panels per side, with one panel tucking inside the other. The industry standard for rack and direct-mail pieces.
- Z-fold (accordion fold): Two folds in opposite directions create a zigzag. Panels open flat without one tucking under another, useful when all panels must be equal in size.
- Gate fold: Two outer panels fold inward to meet at the center without overlapping, creating a reveal effect when opened. Requires that the outer panels be slightly narrower than the inner spread to close cleanly.
- Roll fold (barrel fold): Multiple parallel folds all rolling in the same direction. Each successive panel must be slightly shorter than the last to avoid buckling at the spine edge.
- French fold: The sheet is folded first in one direction, then folded again perpendicular. The result is a four-panel piece printed on one side only, with the blank side hidden inside.
Finished flat sizes derive from standard press sheet dimensions. A common tri-fold brochure is built on a flat size of 8.5 × 11 inches, yielding panels roughly 3.67 inches wide. Gate folds and roll folds often use wider sheets — 11 × 17 or 11 × 25.5 inches — to provide enough panel real estate.
Catalog Construction and Page Planning
Catalogs differ from brochures in that they are multipage documents requiring a binding method and strict page planning based on signature structure. The fundamental unit of a printed catalog is the signature — a stack of sheets folded together and trimmed, with each sheet contributing four pages. Because of this, page counts must always be multiples of four; saddle-stitched catalogs commonly run in multiples of four, while perfect-bound catalogs require a minimum page count — typically 48 pages or more — to allow the spine to be glued and trimmed cleanly.
Binding Methods
- Saddle stitching: Wire staples are driven through the folded spine. Suitable for catalogs up to roughly 64–80 pages, depending on paper weight. Heavier stocks reduce the maximum page count before the spine cracks.
- Perfect binding: Individual signatures are ground at the spine and glued into a flat-backed cover. Used for thicker catalogs and product books. Requires a calculated spine width based on page count and stock caliper.
- Spiral and coil binding: Punched holes accept a plastic coil, allowing the catalog to lay flat. Common for reference books and price guides used in trade settings.
- Sewn binding: Thread is stitched through each signature before gluing, producing greater durability. Standard for high-end or frequently handled catalogs.
Imposition and Creep
Imposition is the arrangement of pages on a press sheet so that they appear in correct order once folded and trimmed. In a saddle-stitched catalog, the outermost signature holds pages 1, 2, and the final two pages; inner signatures hold the middle pages. Software-driven imposition plans account for this automatically, but designers must supply files with pages in sequential order — not pre-imposed — unless the printer specifies otherwise.
Creep (also called push-out or shingling) is the outward displacement of inner pages caused by the thickness of the paper stack. In a thick saddle-stitched catalog, the innermost pages extend slightly beyond the trim edge before cutting. Prepress technicians compensate by shifting inner pages slightly inward, reducing live content on outer pages by a small but measurable amount. Ignoring creep causes trim lines to cut into content on inner pages of thick books.
Prepress Requirements for Multipage Files
Multipage print files carry stricter prepress requirements than single-sheet jobs. PDF/X-1a and PDF/X-4 remain the standard delivery formats; both enforce color space compliance, embedded fonts, and bleed marking.
- Bleed: All artwork extending to the trim edge must include a minimum 0.125-inch bleed beyond the cut line. Catalog covers with full-bleed images on all four sides require bleed on each edge.
- Safe zone: Type and critical graphic elements should remain at least 0.125 inches inside the trim, and at least 0.25 inches from the spine edge on perfect-bound pieces to account for binding pull-in.
- Color mode: All content must be converted to CMYK before delivery. RGB images convert unpredictably at the RIP stage. Spot colors should be limited and clearly named; unintended spot channels add press separations and cost.
- Image resolution: Continuous-tone images should be supplied at 300 ppi at final print size. Line art and bitmapped graphics require 1,200 ppi to reproduce sharp edges without jagged artifacts.
- Total ink coverage: Most offset and digital presses specify a maximum total area coverage (TAC) of 280–320 percent. Rich blacks in large areas are typically built as a mix of all four process inks; single-channel 100% black is preferred for body text to avoid misregistration halos.
Preflight tools embedded in Adobe Acrobat, Enfocus PitStop, and RIP-level checkers will flag oversize ink density, missing bleeds, RGB content, and unembedded fonts before a job reaches the press. Submitting preflighted, compliant files reduces proof cycles and eliminates the most common causes of reprint charges.
Paper Stock Considerations
Stock selection in brochure and catalog work balances appearance, foldability, weight, and mailing cost. Coated papers — gloss, matte, and satin — are standard for image-heavy catalogs because the clay coating prevents ink from absorbing into the fiber, producing sharper dot gain and more saturated color. Uncoated stocks offer a tactile quality suited to lifestyle and editorial pieces but require slightly higher image contrast to compensate for dot gain on press.
Cover stocks for catalogs are measured in points (pt) of caliper. Common cover weights range from 80 lb coated cover (approximately 8–9 pt) to 100 lb or 130 lb for heavier, more durable covers. Text pages use lighter weights — typically 60 lb to 100 lb text — to keep the finished book compact and within postal weight thresholds. Paper grain direction must align with the spine on perfect-bound and saddle-stitched work; cross-grain binding causes covers to curl and spines to crack under humidity changes.
